It looks like winter is coming in with a bang.Tom Skilling, Chicago's go-to weatherman and underground lake surfing hero, compared it to the storm that sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975 on last night's telecast. You can hear the smacking of lips throughout our sweetwater surfing community, as these are the types of systems we wait all year for. And yes, the maps are lighting up with the possibility of a five day swell and wave heights reaching 20+ feet on certain Great Lakes.
More than a few of us are ditching work and giving chase. Jack and I will be trying for three lakes in three days; the models for each look insane...
Lake Huron: waves 10+ feet and winds offshore
Lake Michigan: waves 8+ feet and winds side-offshore
Lake Superior: waves 10+ feet and winds offshore
These are expected wave heights at the beach - offshore wave heights will be much bigger. We'll snap some photos and share our findings.
Good luck those on the hunt!

its funny, well not that funny, but i left Chicago, to surf, and was in south Africa for 3 months during which time i was told we had unbelievably bad conditions, the worst in years for them some said. And i looked like some really fun days back on on the lake. Now I've moved on to Indonesia, not much here at the moment, in term of swell, and more insane surf looks on tap for the lakes.
Even though Ive had some incredible days in the Indian Ocean, i'm jealous thinking about whats happening back home in the fresh water. And for lots of the time the waves haven't been much bigger than a good northwest blow in the fall.
I hope you surf 'til you can't paddle, and that we get another storm next year at this time so i can come play then. Until then i'm hoping for more swell over here.
I guess it serves me right to think i could find better waves where the lineups are too crowded.
Ryan,
What did you score?
Coming soon, Pete.
