New Roll - 1

I am still using a Nikon N50 35mm film camera. It has taken all of the wave, surf trip, friend, family, and other pictures I have.

The one thing that kinda stinks in this give-it-to-me-now world is that, when it comes to obtaining the finished photos, it will not do that. It's more like give-it-to-me-a-few-days-from-now. Yet, I have come to realize that this might not be a bad thing.

Knowing that there are only 24 exposures on that roll has taught me to value those exposures. In other words, I only try to take good (a relative term) photos, because the last thing I want to see when I pick up the developed roll are a bunch of crappy ones.

Sometimes it'll take months to get through one roll simply because I'm not taking that many pictures. A developed roll might end up having pics from a trip we took last year along with pics from the latest trip. The anticipation is fun.

I'll start a small series on this blog using photos from my latest roll. Here is the first set...

These were taken on a small, clean loggin' day on the South End late this past summer. Bernie, B-Rad and I went early and enjoyed a brilliant dawn sunshine session. I captured the equipment being used.

9'6 Bing "NR Slim"

9'8 Jacobs Tom Wegener "Model A"

9'10 Bing "Silver Spoon"

6'6 Jon Wegener "Peanut" Alaia

Nice Alaia, How does it work on the Lake?

Hi Tony,

I have had it out a handful of times now and am really digging it. The challenge is to get it out when the waves are right for it - something we have to wait for here...clean, peeling lines make way more sense than peaky, bumpy surf.

Learning to surf it has been a challenge but I am getting it. Simply catching a wave isn't easy. Now that we are into 6/5/4mm and 7mm boots/gloves for the next 5+ months it will be even tougher!

Ya, Its really hard to paddle in with the bump here. I just shaped a 6'8" out of Cedar, I know Wegener has been making them out of Paulownia. The Cedar seems to suck in a lot of water after a while... so I like to see if the Paulownia is any different. Where did you pick yours up at? You think you'll get in any at the shop?

They are using Paulownia specifically because of it's ability to not take on water. It's light, buoyant, and hard. From what I have heard Tom talk about, it sounds like an ideal wood. There may be others?

I got mine through Bing, as they are the US distributors for Tom and Jon. I have contemplated bringing one or two in, but they are a bit of a novelty and I'm not sure how much interest there is.

I can also get Paulownia blanks from them, up to 6'6, I believe.

If I could do a special order would that b possible? can you get any patagonia boards?

Yep, we can special order anything from Bing or Jacobs, including the Wegener alaias. They carry a decent number in stock, or you could have Jon custom shape one for you.

If you are referring to the blanks, that is no problem either.

We don't have an account with Patagonia yet so we can't order trhough them. That may be coming down the road.

Contact me at ryan@thirdcoastsurfshop.com if you want more details on ordering the alaia!
